Protect Your Vision with Regular Diabetic Eye Exams
Diabetic eye diseases, including diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema, are common but treatable complications of diabetes.
When detected early, these conditions are manageable and their impact on vision can be minimized. That’s why it’s important for people with diabetes to have a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year.
Regular exams help identify any issues early, allowing for effective treatment and peace of mind. Our team is here to support you in maintaining your long-term vision health.
Diagnostic Imaging for Better Eye Health
We use optos retinal imaging and optical coherence tomography (OCT) to detect eye diseases early and monitor treatment progress.
Optos captures over 80% of your retina in one image, while OCT provides detailed cross-sectional images of the retina. Both of these technologies assist us in detecting common diabetic-related conditions such as diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema.
What Is Diabetic Retinopathy?
Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of uncontrolled diabetes that can lead to vision loss, often without any early symptoms. While not inevitable, diabetic retinopathy can develop if blood sugar remains uncontrolled for extended periods.
High blood sugar damages the blood vessels in the retina, causing them to bleed or leak fluid. New, fragile blood vessels may form to replace the damaged ones, but they can also bleed or leak, further affecting vision.
Regular eye exams can detect diabetic retinopathy before you notice any changes in your vision.
What Is Diabetic Macular Edema?
Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a potential complication of diabetic retinopathy.
It occurs when ongoing damage to the blood vessels in the retina causes fluid to leak into the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. This fluid buildup leads to swelling (edema) in the macula, which can blur vision.
Early detection through regular eye exams is essential to managing DME and preventing further vision loss.
